Our contact lists today are overwhelming, to say the least. When attempting to manage your contact list and make sense of it all, it’s ideal to break them down into manageable chunks that our brains can process more easily.
You may choose to sort your clients by the amount of money they have spent on projects in the past, the type of work they request, the location that they are in, or even how easy they are to work with.
There are many ways to sort your list, but the main point is that it should be logical to you. By doing so, you will be much more likely to remember who each person is, while tactfully avoiding information overload.
Automate Your Marketing
A smart marketing automation plan is much more than simply maintaining an email list and sending updates. A marketing automation plan is personable and specific and will have a solid goal in mind: getting more business.
You’ll be able to create automated emails based on a client’s previous activity, buying habits, and individual characteristics. This automation will make your emails much more effective in maintaining a client relationship over time until they’re ready for your services again.
Develop an Online Presence
Having an online presence in our modern world is a necessity, as is a good-looking, functional website. It is not a ‘set-it-and-forget-it’ tool. You should work on growing the popularity of your website, by providing regular niche content, building your brand, and engaging with your followers. A freelancer website with testimonials, samples, a great ‘About’ page, and a contact page can do wonders for landing new clients.
Social media is a great way to maintain relationships with existing contacts, and blog is a great way to provide value. If you’re using your blog and social media effectively, you will break down barriers between you and clients, connect more deeply with them, and make them want to work with you.
Remember Names Through Repetition or Mnemonic Devices
When meeting new contacts in person, it pays to make an effort to remember their names. Learn some mnemonic devices or wordplay tricks to remember the names of people you meet, or go with some serious repetition.
Be sure to make eye contact when speaking with someone new and try to notice details about their face, interests, and the conversation you had. Try to use their name a few times in conversation. The audible repetitions will be even more helpful than mentally repeating their name.
Manage Contacts and Customer Relationships with a CRM
A great CRM or contact management software will strengthen your business and make managing your contacts a much simpler task. A CRM will track client activity and help you to communicate with clients and leads to facilitate a new sale.

Successfully managing contacts as a freelancer is one of the best things you can do to grow your business and a crucial part of a job where you don’t always know what’s going to happen from day to day. You never know where a contact may lead, so put your best foot forward and keep your networking and contact management skills in check.
